How to Prep Your Skin for a Laser Treatment (And Keep Your Results After)

You've booked your laser appointment — now what? Whether it's your first session or you're partway through a package, what you do in the days before and after your treatment matters more than most people realize. Skipping proper prep or aftercare can lead to unnecessary irritation, uneven results, or pigmentation changes that take weeks to resolve.

The good news is that laser-ready skin doesn't require a complicated routine. With a few targeted adjustments before your appointment, and a calm, protective approach after, you can support your skin through each session and get the most out of your results over time.

In this guide, you'll find five clinically informed tips covering both pre-laser prep and post-laser aftercare — plus answers to the questions we hear most often at Sona Laser. No matter your skin type or which treatment you're undergoing, these steps are designed to protect your skin and extend your results.

Understanding Your Skin Before a Laser Appointment

Before diving into the tips, it helps to know what's actually happening during a laser treatment. Laser energy targets specific structures beneath the skin's surface — a hair follicle in the case of laser hair removal, or pigmented or damaged tissue in skin rejuvenation treatments. This creates a controlled response in the skin, which is followed by a healing phase that can range from 24 hours to several days depending on the treatment type and your individual skin.

This is why personalization matters. Someone with sensitive skin will need a gentler aftercare approach than someone with normal skin. Someone prone to hyperpigmentation needs to be especially consistent about sun protection. Knowing your skin type helps me adjust treatment settings and helps you set realistic expectations for recovery.

5 Skincare Tips for Before and After Your Laser Treatment

The difference between a comfortable, effective laser session and an irritating one often comes down to the prep and aftercare on either side of it. Here are five steps that make a real difference.

1. Protect Your Skin from Sun Exposure Before Your Appointment

Tanned or sunburned skin is significantly more reactive to laser energy. Treating sun-exposed skin raises the risk of burns, blistering, and post-treatment pigmentation changes — which can be harder to correct than the original concern you came in for.

Aim to avoid direct sun exposure for at least two weeks before your session. If full avoidance isn't possible, apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every single day. Come into your appointment with untanned, unburned skin whenever possible.

This is especially important for clients in sun-heavy months or anyone spending significant time outdoors.

2. Pause Certain Skincare Products Beforehand

Several popular skincare ingredients increase skin sensitivity and should be paused before laser treatment. These include retinoids (retinol, tretinoin), AHAs (glycolic acid, lactic acid), BHAs (salicylic acid), and any physical or chemical exfoliating scrubs. Stop using these products at least five to seven days before your appointment.

For laser hair removal specifically, avoid waxing, threading, plucking, or depilatory creams in the treatment area in the weeks leading up to your session. Shaving is the recommended method, as the hair follicle needs to remain intact beneath the skin surface for the laser to target it effectively.

Arrive to your appointment with clean, product-free skin — no makeup, fragrance, deodorant in the treatment area, or SPF applied that morning.

3. Keep It Calm and Clean in the First 48 Hours After Treatment

The first 24 to 48 hours after a laser session are your skin's most active recovery window. During this time, stick to a fragrance-free gentle cleanser and lukewarm water. Avoid anything that introduces heat — hot showers, saunas, steam rooms, and high-intensity exercise all fall into this category, as heat can intensify redness and slow recovery.

Keep your routine minimal. This is not the time to try new products or reintroduce the actives you paused. Let your skin do what it needs to do.

4. Focus on Hydration and Barrier Repair in the Days After

As your skin moves through its healing phase, restoring and maintaining moisture is key. Look for fragrance-free moisturizers containing ceramides, aloe vera, or hyaluronic acid. These ingredients support the skin barrier and reduce sensitivity without introducing irritation risk.

Hold off on active ingredients like vitamin C, retinol, AHAs, and BHAs until your skin has fully settled, typically five to seven days after our laser sessions. When in doubt, ask me before reintroducing anything. I will advise you based on what we do and how your skin responds.

5. Sun Protection After Treatment Is Non-Negotiable

Freshly treated skin is more vulnerable to UV damage than it normally would be. UV exposure in the days and weeks following a laser session can cause hyperpigmentation, interfere with your results, and extend your recovery time.

Wear broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher every day following your appointment, both indoors and out, rain or shine. If you're spending time outside, reapply every two hours and consider a hat or sun-protective clothing for additional coverage. This step is especially critical in the first four weeks after treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

About Laser Skincare Prep and Aftercare

How far in advance should I start prepping my skin before a laser appointment? For most treatments, beginning one to two weeks in advance is enough. This means stopping retinoids and exfoliants, prioritizing SPF daily, and keeping your routine simple and gentle. Your provider will give you a specific pre-care checklist at the time of your consultation.

Can I wear makeup to my appointment or after? Arrive with a completely clean face — no makeup, skincare products, or SPF applied on the day of treatment. After your session, most providers recommend avoiding makeup for at least 24 hours to reduce irritation risk and give your skin room to recover.

What should I do if my skin feels itchy or red after treatment? Some redness and itching in the first day or two is completely normal and expected. A fragrance-free aloe gel or a gentle cooling moisturizer can help ease discomfort. If redness, swelling, or blistering persists beyond 48 to 72 hours, contact your provider directly.

Can I continue my regular skincare routine between sessions? Yes, with some adjustments. Keep your routine consistent and simple between appointments. Daily SPF and gentle hydration should be non-negotiables. Hold off on introducing new actives and always check with me before adding anything new to your routine. I am only a text away!

How many sessions will I need before I see lasting results? This varies by treatment type and individual skin. Laser hair removal typically requires six to eight sessions for lasting reduction, spaced several weeks apart. Skin rejuvenation treatments vary based on the concern being addressed. Your provider will outline a recommended schedule during your consultation.
